The Haselmoos pond is located in the municipality of Schlieren in the canton of Zurich. It is located south of the city center in a forest area at 542 meters above sea level. In addition to its function as a nature conservation element, the pond with its lush riverbank vegetation and the surrounding tall herbaceous meadows also offers many experiences for those seeking relaxation. The fireplace with seating invites you to linger and observe.
If such a forest pond were not mown annually, the open water surface would become silted up within a few years and the tall herbaceous plants and shoreline vegetation would become overgrown. To prevent this, the Nature Network has been maintaining this pond for several years.
Equipped with a scythe mower, brush cutter and underwater mower, the volunteers mowed the lush vegetation, then trimmed it and piled it up in individual heaps at the edges. Where necessary, individual groups of bushes were pushed back using a chainsaw. Underwater mowing before the onset of winter removes the biomass produced from the pond instead of it decomposing and gradually filling up the pond at the bottom. This also means that more sunlight falls on the water surface. Mowing the bankside vegetation also prevents the open area from becoming overgrown and woody plants from establishing themselves.
