The 515 km2 area of the Beverin Nature Park extends around Piz Beverin. Beautiful alpine landscapes characterize the image of the nature park, as do the ibexes, which serve as the nature park's heraldic animal. The nature park contains various important habitats for typical alpine animal and plant species.
In order to preserve, enhance or restore these habitats, the park relies on volunteer work from farmers, schools or hunters, or even on the work of civil servants. In this context, the Nature Network was able to contribute to the enhancement of these biologically valuable areas for two weeks in October 2022.
Since alpine farming has experienced a massive decline over the last 100 years, 95% of the valuable dry meadows and pastures have become overgrown with bushes and forests. Many animal and plant species that depend on these habitats have experienced a massive decline in their populations.
The volunteers were able to contribute to the recovery of these habitats at three different locations in the park. The volunteers worked with hedge trimmers, hand saws and chainsaws and cleared large areas of bushes. In this way, a considerable area of former dry meadows and pastures was recovered and habitat was created for various species. The volunteers were able to observe how the first butterflies were already exploring the cleared area and appreciating their work.
